Notes from today: Here are the slides. Feel free to print them off for you. I think it would be a good idea. NOTES FOR Ch 15 SLIDE SHOW
Be ready for questions based on the 7 vocab words tomorrow. Today in class we did two things: 1. we did a little cut and paste vocab assignments. They answered questions about a Political cartoon and then picked up a chart. They both are in this document. On the chart, They can cut out the items I have HERE and tape them (Large bold words on the front of the flap and the definition on the paper UNDER the flap) to the page. Color the outside or top of the flap different colors or designs. Cut out the flaps as one unit, leaving the tall rectangle on the left side intact. Glue or tape this to a piece of notebook paper by using the previously mentioned tall rectangle as the taping or gluing point. Then take scissors and cut the flaps apart so that hey are attached, but can be bent back to view the other work on the vocab. Then you paste or tape the definition to the notebook paper under the correct tab. Then next to the definition, somewhere under the flap or tab, sketch a picture of what the word is or does. If they were absent or did not finish, they need to this eveing using what I gave them here Example of what it would look like. This is not the exact same list of words. 2. We also did notes today. You will find a PDF of what we did or looked at with the notes. You can fin that slide show on yesterday's blog, below this one. You can print that off and use it as a guide or notes for 15-1.
The little vocab flap assignment is due Thursday. It must be put together with Word on outside, and definition and sketch of what it is or does under the flap. You will find the words on the slide show below.
Did notes today in class over 15-1. Here is the slide show. You may print it off if you choose to. Today we went over a worksheet we did in class yesterday over the Mexican War. HERE ARE THE ANSWERS FOR IT. You will need the paper, completed on Monday or Tuesday of next week. Here is the original paper if you were out on Tuesday, April, 18th. This is the key for the video we watched. Be sure your answers go with mine. No need for the video upload since I have posted the key. BE SURE YOU BRING ALL OF THESE PAPERS WITH YOU ALONG WITH THE NOTES PACK I AM HANDING OUT, ALL NEXT WEEK SO WE CAN USE THEM ON AN IN-CLASS ASSIGNMENT. THE BIG IDEA QUESTION IS WHAT IS MANIFEST DESTINY AND GIVE ME SOME EXAMPLES OF THE UNITED STATES DOING JUST THAT. This weekend, the kids need to do a 2 page (1.5 at least) journal entry in the packet. FOR MONDAY/TUESDAY: They will be turning in in the packet. It is worth 40 TEST points. All info must be filled out on pages 20, 22, 23 and 3 pages of Journals. I have added the packet to this page in case they want to rewrite it for some reason. This evening the students must be sure they are caught up with their: LIST OF SUPPLIES( page 22), then on page 23: PROPER DATE, HOW MANY DAYS THEY TRAVELED, HOW MUCH FOOD THEY STARTED WITH AND THE AMOUNT THEY HAVE LEFT BASED ON THE NUMBER OF DAYS AND AMOUNT PER DAY THEIR CHARACTERS EAT, HOW MANY POUNDS OF OTHER SUPPLIES AND HOW MUCH MONEY THEY HAVE LEFT. THEN: They are to take their first JOURNAL ENTRY on the diary pages. They do one entry, with at least ONE paragraph DESCRIBING their journey so far. IT NEEDS TO BE DATED THE SAME AS THE LAST ENTRY ON PAGE 23. They are to write as their character. These are due tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!! This will go in as an evaluation grade, or 90%. Talked about Texas Revolution and annexation today. They filled out a paper on it. Below are the answer to it, if you were absent. 1.They were invited to so MEX can have people there loyal to MEX govt. Keeps the natives from taking it over, or MEX losing it to someone else…. 2.Become Catholic 3.Sam Houston 4.Gonzales 5.Santa Anna 6.Travis- TX Bowie-LA Crockett-TN 7.3/6/1836 8.San Antonio, TX 9.He was captured and forced to sign a treaty 10.Almost 10 years 11.Sam Houston was the first Pres of TX 12.We didn’t want another slave state in the Union. Would throw off the balance from the Missouri Compromise. 13.1845 We also filled out another paper about 4 trails west. Here is what it said. You will need this information eventually as well. Mormon Trail: The Mormon followers left Illinois after Joseph Smith was murdered. They then went to Utah and set up what Salt Lake City. Santa Fe Trail: It headed south west to Santa Fe Mexico. It was used for trade. California Trail: It lead to California. Many people used it to move there. It ended in Sacramento, CA qOregon Trail: 2000 mile trail. The places we now know as Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Idaho and Utah would probably not be a part of the United States today were it not for the Oregon Trail. That's because the Trail was the only feasible way for settlers to get across the mountains. -1 in 10 died along the way. Cholera, small pox, dysentery, measles, starvation and to a lesser degree, Indian attacks were the leading causes of death. -Native Americans were much more helpful than harmful, until they became sick with Small Pox. Then they didn’t want anything to do with the settlers. -Former mountain men lead many of the wagon trains west. Experience in the Rockies. -It was dangerous. Many perils and hardships awaited the people who used it. There is one dead person for every mile of the trail. -This was the largest migration in US history. It kicked off a massive move west on the Oregon Trail. Over the next 25 years more than a half million people went west on the Trail. Some went all the way to Oregon's Willamette Valley in search of farmland--many more split off for California in search of gold. Today we talked about Mountain Men and their contributions to westward movement.
We also drove home the idea of MANIFEST DESTINY: Obvious Fate. The belief that a higher power ordained, or said, that we should own this land fro ocean to ocean. Tonight we are doing a worksheet introducing some information on Texas and how it became independent. We will talk about the Alamo tomorrow along with the Mexican-American War. Hopefully we will start talking about the OREGON TRAIL on Wed and begin the game. I have put 3 days aside for the playing of the game/simulation on the Oregon Trail. YOU WILL FIND ALL OF THIS INFORMATION IN CHAPTER 11. PLEASE WATCH THIS SPEECH. IT IS THE 4TH OF JULY SPEECH BY FREDERICK DOUGLASS, READ BY JAMES EARL JONES. Today we discussed, in preparation for our guest speaker, the role of Blues music in our history ans where it came from. I would like the students to take 10 minutes tonight and listen to at least 2 of the 4 types that I mentioned in class. Delta, Piedmont, Chicago and St. Louis Blues. They can go to YouTube and listen. Some suggestions are: Muddy Waters Holwin Wolf Robert Johnson Big Momma Thornton Etta James Memphis Minnie Elmore James Lightnin Hopkins Little Walter Mississippi John Hurt Blind Lemon Jefferson Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee Tampa Red BB King John Lee Hooker Ruth Brown Billie Holiday Coco Taylor Charles Brown Gatemouth Brown Son House |
